£32m plan for Bishopbriggs

AMBITIOUS plans to regenerate Bishopbriggs town centre are moving ahead.

Muse Developments have submitted a revised outline planning application with East Dunbartonshire Council for the 32m project in Bishopbriggs.

The plans include building a large retail store, retail units, a mix of new houses and a new care home in the area.

Proposals to demolish and relocate St Matthew's Parish Church are also part of the masterplan.

The ambitious project would see the creation of a new town centre car park, landscaped areas and a new civic space.

The current Bishopbriggs Academy building would be demolished, but the developers have included the possibility to retain the school's 800,000 sports hall for community use or for a medical centre or day nursery.

Muse Developments' regional director, Steve Turner, said: "This is a fantastic development which will revitalise Bishopbriggs town centre and potentially attract new jobs and investment to the town.

"We have brought the community and local politicians into our thinking for the project and the new submission reflects those discussions.

"The future of the school sports hall was one of the areas of discussion and we have made provision for its retention for community use subject to a proven business case regarding its viability and sustainability."

If the development is given the go-ahead, Muse Developments expect to start work on the project in the summer of 2010.
