£500,000 skatepark project on track
AFTER years of campaigning to build a skatepark in Kirkintilloch, work will soon start to turn the dream into reality.
Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative (KSI) is just waiting on drainage works being approved at the site in Luggie Park, before building can begin on the 500,000 project.
The eagerly anticipated facility has the potential to attract up to 10,000 young people throughout East Dunbartonshire for skateboarding, in-line skating and BMX bike riding.
KSI project co-ordinator Susan Murray said: "It has been a bit of a rollercoaster at times, but we are delighted that it will soon be built.
"Once the drainage work is sorted out we can push ahead with the construction, which will take around three months.
"It's going to be a fantastic facility for young people and they are really looking forward to using it.
"It will give them a place to meet rather than hanging around the streets. It's also a fun way for them to exercise."
Susan says the skatepark project has reached this important stage due to the hard work of the young people, parents, volunteers, support from the wider community and major funding.
KSI also has a mobile skatepark which it can take to venues across East Dunbartonshire. Volunteers are currently required to help out and training will be provided.
KSI's AGM takes place on Monday (August 25) in the Omnia Building, Westerhill Road, Bishopbriggs, from 7.30pm.
