£50k boost for Bishopbriggs town centre is welcome news

A TIMELY boost for a town centre has been hailed as “fantastic” news.

Approval has been given for B&Q to be reduced in size to make way for two new shops at Strathkelvin Retail Park in Bishopbriggs.

A legal agreement has been hammered out between the applicant – Caledonian Property Investments Ltd – and the council – which includes:

* £50,000 towards the town centre development fund

* £100,000 for traffic mitigation works

* £40,000 towards civic pride.

There will also be £50,000 for utilities work and £1,577 towards route corridor developer.

The signing of the Section 75 legal agreement will also see the construction of new entrances and servicing at B&Q, as well as alterations to the associated car park area.

Councillor Billy Hendry, convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board, welcomed the development.

He said: “This is fantastic news and further evidence that Strathkelvin Business Park is going from strength to strength.

“The traders, which have yet to be agreed, will be joining an impressive range of national retailers, making the retail park an even more attractive proposition to discerning shoppers.

“This consent reflects the planning authority’s commitment to supporting economic development in the area and builds on the growth of the park, which has become one of the most thriving retail parks in Scotland.”

The council said the plans would allow B&Q to reduce its size to more effectively trade and to redevelop part of its store and garden centre to introduce a number of new retail units.

It is hoped that could create jobs for people locally.
