A new £2.5m community centre is on its way

THE doors will close on a popular community centre at the end of the month to allow work to start on a brand new facility.

Hillhead Community Centre, in Kirkintilloch, will close on March 31.

Preliminary work will begin on site in April and residents can expect the demolition of the existing building to begin in May.

A new community facility will open to the public in 2014. The existing community centre is more than 80 years old and local people have long campaigned for a replacement.

Last year the council committed to spend £2.5million to build the new Hillhead centre facility.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The community centre is very important to people living in Hillhead.

“The existing building is extremely well used by a variety of groups and people of all ages.

“Whilst we are looking forward to using this new improved community centre, it is important that community groups who use the existing facility can continue to meet during the rebuild.

“The council has worked with these groups to find alternative accommodation so that local activities can continue during the closure.”
