A 'reel'good news story for Antermony Loch

A DELIGHTED councillor has welcomed the completion of the first phase of work to upgrade facilities at Antermony Loch.

Councillor Charles Kennedy hopes the major environmental programme will attract local anglers to the Milton of Campsie loch and encourage youngsters to fish safely from its banks.

With co-operation from East Dunbartonshire Council's community service scheme, a series of proposals have been agreed, which include:

the removal of redundant buildings at the site

clearance of trees and overgrown bushes

the introduction of new species including Wild Juniper as well as nesting boxes for barn owls

improved access and upgrading of car parking facilities

a new pass so that anglers can fish on any part on the bank safely.

The loch will soon be celebrating its centenary as the original source of fresh water to Kirkintilloch and has been managed by Caurnie Angling Club since the early part of last century.

Councillor Kennedy told the Herald: "I am absolutely delighted with the work that the community service scheme is doing in the Antermony Loch area.

"It is a jewel in the crown of East Dunbartonshire and I am delighted that the council, working closely with Caurnie Angling Club, is now able to bring the loch and its surrounding area up to an acceptable modern standard.

"Also, by working closely with the biodiversity officer, species that have been lost to this area will be brought back, as well as the introduction of new varieties of trees such as the Wild Juniper."

Councillor Kennedy said that due to the work already done, an increasing number of swans are nesting on the loch and rare birds, such as the Reed Bunting and Snipe, have been reintroduced.

The Milton of Campsie councillor has also welcomed Caurnie Angling Club's policy which encourages youngsters to take up the sport of angling.

He added: "The work being done by Caurnie Angling Club to attract young teenagers to the sport is to be commended. I see a very bright future for the loch."
