Action promised after sick days rise at council
THERE has been a rise in the number of sick days taken at East Dunbartonshire Council – the area’s largest employer.
A total of 16.1 days per full-time post were lost through sickness during 2011/12 at the council – a rise of more than four days on the previous year and more than double the annual target.
That figure relates to full-time equivalent posts – of which there are around 4,100 at the council. It does not include teaching staff.
The council has agreed to introduce a new action plan to address absence levels.
It will be taken forward in conjunction with trade unions and linked to the authority’s wellbeing at work policy.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “We are obviously disappointed in our absence figures for 2011/12 and have tasked senior officers with developing an action plan to address this.”
As well as looking at data reliability issues, the plan will provide extra support to managers to help individuals return to work.
Councillor Geekie said: “The action plan to be brought to the next policy and resources committee to agree implementation and progress will be monitored at future meetings.”
