A popular pool has been forced to close for at least a month for refurbishment works - meaning children will be unable to enjoy a dip during at least half of their Easter holidays.
The swimming pool, sauna, steamroom and ‘wetside’ changing rooms at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre closed on Saturday, March 15, with East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust bosses estimating that the “refurbishment and improvement” works will take “approximately four weeks” to carry out.
If the work is carried out on schedule it will mean the pool will remain shut for the first week of the Easter holidays, while the usual programme of pool activities has been scrapped for the duration of the break.
General Manager of EDLC Trust, Mark Grant, said, “The swimming pool at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre is extremely popular with local residents and the numbers using the facility has increased year on year.
“Due to the large amount of footfall at the poolside and in the changing facilities, the existing tiled floors require to be replaced.
“The project will see brand new flooring laid and at the same time an enhanced drainage system will be installed. Other cosmetic works will also be carried out during the closure.”
He added: “Unfortunately these works are going to coincide with the first week of the school Easter holidays, but it is imperative that we invest in these improvements at the earliest opportunity.
“There are places available for the many other activities on at the centre during the holidays. Customers can also use the swimming pools at the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs and the Allander at Bearsden which will be open as usual during this time.
“I would like to apologise for the inconvenience this closure will cause and to thank our customers for their patience as we improve the environment and experience for everyone who uses the facilities at the Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre.”
