Are high-rise flats for the high jump in North Glasgow?
RADICAL plans to demolish high-rise flats which were meant to be kept and invested in has sparked anger among some residents.
Sighthill has been revealed as the preferred site for the Athletes’ Village if the city wins its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games – paving the way for a £250million regeneration project in the area.
However, the proposals to bring down the remaining two multi-storey blocks in Pinkston, which house 400 residents and are owned by Glasgow Housing Association, has caused anger in some quarters of the community.
More than 100 people attended a public meeting last week to discuss the situation.
Elaine Ellis, secretary of Sighthill Community Council, said: “We feel completely betrayed. There was no warning or consultation.
“We were promised in May that our homes were safe and going to be invested in. And in August we were told the work on the blocks was imminent.”
However, GHA said the overwhelming majority of tenants they have spoken to are happy with the plans.
Councillor Allan Stewart, chairperson of the Transformational Regeneration Area board, welcomed the proposals.
He said: “It’s a breath of fresh air for the area. What a difference it is going to make to people’s lives.
“We will be sitting down with representatives of the community so they can give their contribution and say what type of houses should be built.”
The plans to make Sighthill the preferred site for the Athletes’ Village have been approved by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government.
