Back to the drawing board for Bishopbriggs town centre
PEOPLE power has forced supermarket giants Morrisons to re-think plans for a controversial new store in Bishopbriggs town centre.
The supermarket is not going ahead with its current proposals for the former Bishopbriggs High School site.
It will now engage with local residents to draw up new proposals for the site.
People were left ‘extremely disappointed’ that a revised masterplan by Morrisons revealed that only a new store, 450 vehicle car park and community hub would be built.
They want to see more of the area redeveloped, in particular Morrisons current store at the Triangle, which is owned by Derwent.
Community activists recently set up the Bishopbriggs Town Team to create a masterplan for the area.
Deputy council leader Billy Hendry, who has criticised Morrisons plans, met with the company’s development executive Richard Bakes last week.
Councillor Hendry told the Herald: “He said that Morrisons are not going to take forward their original plan.
“What I want to do now is facilitate meetings between them, Derwent, other key stakeholders, the council and the town team group to drive forward a masterplan.
“This is not about getting rid of Morrisons, it’s about engaging with them.”
Morrisons already has outline planning permission for a new store and a full application was expected to be made in the near future.
Bishopbriggs Town Team have given the news a cautious welcome.
Group spokesman Donald Macdonald said: “We are still going to develop a community led masterplan for Bishopbriggs.
“We can’t afford to sit back and allow other organisations to do something the community needs to do for itself.”
More than 100 people recently took part in a walkabout consultation of the town centre.
