Baffled by delay over noise-proofing at pitches
ANGRY residents are raising a racket over noise problems at a state-of-the-art sports facility.
North Lanarkshire Council said it would erect baffle boards around the all-weather pitches at Stepps Cultural Centre last year, after residents in nearby Blenheim Avenue and Anniesdale Avenue raised concerns about the noise.
However, Stepps Community Council says the boards have still not been installed.
The astrograss pitches are used by school pupils during the day and are let out to groups, including five-a-side teams until 10pm at night.
A spokesperson for the community council said: “The noise has been causing problems since the facility opened.
“Residents are having to live with bad language, shouting and balls coming into their gardens.
“The council should get on with the work. Baffle boards are definitely needed.
“Hopefully they will solve the problem.”
Councillor Frances McGlinchey said: “Noise abatement measures have been discussed at length since before the school was built and since opening.
“From the community council’s and neighbours’ perspective it would seem that no one is taking responsibility for the installation of baffle boards.
“I hope an arrangement can be put in place as a matter of urgency.”
The PFI school and cultural centre - a partnership between North Lanarkshire Council and Balfour Beatty - was opened four years ago.
A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: “The work to erect baffle boards is presently being priced and, subject to satisfactory costings, will proceed as quickly as possible.”
