Ban Buckie to help beat yob culture
CALLS have been made for a European ban on Buckfast and alcoholic drinks with a high caffeine content.
Scottish Labour MEP Catherine Stihler, who comes from Moodiesburn and is a former pupil of Glenmanor Primary School, has asked the European Parliament's market and consumer protection committee to impose a ban on all alcoholic drinks containing caffeine, including Buckfast.
The MEP's call follows a recent report by Strathclyde Police that claimed Buckfast was named in 5,000 crime reports over the last three years, including almost 500 violent incidents.
Ms Stihler told the Herald: "I feel very strongly about this.
"The report from Strathclyde Police was truly shocking and there is a real need to act.
"This has gone on for too long and enough is enough.
"It is a global issue, although the affect in Scotland seems to be caused by one product.
"So many communities are affected by it.
"I'm hoping that by working together across the European Union we can get it on the agenda and try and push for a ban due to the health risks."
