Bank closed due to staff flow problems!

FRUSTRATED savers were turned away from a council-run bank recently.

East Dunbartonshire Municipal Bank operates out of council offices across the area - including a branch in Main Street, Lennoxtown.

Their website boasts: “We proudly call this the friendly bank, providing a range of services in a confidential and efficient manner.”

But on Friday, January 27, account holders were astonished to find that there were no staff available to carry out transactions in Lennoxtown.

One angry resident said: “The offices were open, but when I went in to make a withdrawal I was told that I would have to go all the way to Kirkintilloch to get my own money.

“It’s just absolutely ridiculous. I know the council are making budget cuts, but surely they can manage to have at least one person available to serve customers at the bank. Other people were wanting to pay their bills, but they couldn’t do that either.

“What if someone had needed money for an emergency? It doesn’t make you think well of the whole organisation.”

Ian Black, head of finance and information and communications technology at East Dunbartonshire Council, admitted there had been an issue.

He said: “On Friday, January 27, we experienced staff shortages at the Municipal Bank in Lennoxtown, which meant unfortunately the bank had to close between 9am and 1pm.

“However, the council was able to arrange cover for the afternoon and the bank reopened at 2pm.

“We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.

“We are not aware of any other issues when customers have been told they could not withdraw money.”
