Bishopbriggs needs new shops and parking

SHOPS, parking and a long-term future for the sports hall – just some of the priorities spelled out by residents of Bishopbriggs for the redevelopment of the town centre.

In a comprehensive survey by Jo Swinson MP, residents rated retail to be of greatest importance, followed closely by long-stay car parking.

Although car parking is currently available at Morrisons at the Triangle, it is strictly for short-stay.

A third of respondents were keen for more retail shops, with 86 per cent in favour of a quality food retailer such as Marks & Spencer.

Residents also identified a strong need for clothes shops and boutiques in the town.

An overwhelming 93 per cent want to see the existing sports hall retained for community use, demonstrating their support for preserving existing community resources and involving facilities for young people in the redevelopment.

Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, said: "With this survey, Bishopbriggs residents have made their views on the town centre clear.

"Residents are aspirational about the kind of shops they want to see in the town. Marks & Spencer is clearly a preferred choice, but other shops such as Waitrose, Next and a shoe retailer would also be welcomed. Many also indicated a preference for independent shops to retain the town centre's individual character."

The survey involved over 9,000 households within the area.

A council spokesperson said: "The council is well aware of Bishopbriggs town centre's strengths and its development needs and there is nothing new in Ms Swinson's findings.

"All six councillors for the Bishopbriggs area have been working to take the town further forward.

"The council is totally committed to Bishopbriggs town centre and over the years has worked in partnership with residents, shoppers and traders."
