A tennis club is teaming up with local businesses to celebrate one of Bishopbriggs’ most famous sons.

Bishopbriggs Tennis Club will be hosting the first ever Thomas Muir Cup, in conjunction with Huntershill Village, on Saturday, May 24.

It’s named after Scottish political reformer Thomas Muir of Huntershill - who also has a festival held in his honour every November.

A club spokesperson said: “The tournament has been named after the ‘Father of Scottish Democracy’ and aims to bring local tennis players together, as well as highlighting our local hero Thomas Muir.

“The tournament is a mixed doubles event and will involve players from Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Stepps, Westerton, Milngavie, Virgin Active Milngavie, Thorn Park and Bearsden Tennis Club.

“Our aim is to make this tournament a success, becoming an annual event in the tennis calender.

“Play will commence at 10.30am and a warm welcome will be made to all spectators on the day. Refreshments will be provided throughout the event.”
