Blankets sent on their way from Kirkintilloch to help the poor

SEW brilliant – the latest batch of blankets made by caring people in Kirkintilloch will soon be making their way to countries in need.

Kirkintilloch Soroptimists have been collecting knitted squares from Maureen’s Woolcart in the town’s Regent Centre for more than 10 years.

The squares are handed into the Woolcart and distributed to members of the Soroptimists to sew together.

So far an amazing 1,000 blankets have been sent to Romania, Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

They have gone to people traumatised by war, earthquakes and flooding.

Another 20 blankets will soon be sent off.

They are given to Scottish International Relief to distribute.

Knitted baby goods have also been handed in and given to the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow.

A spokesperson for the Soroptimists said: “We wish to give a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has participated in this great humanitarian effort and ask that more people become involved.

“Information can be obtained from Maureen at the Woolcart.”

The Soroptimists’ president Margaret Harvey and members Jackie Burge, Margaret Tomlinson and Christine Lorimer are pictured with the blankets.
