FAMILIES fled their homes after a fire broke out in their block.

Fifteen people had to be moved out of their homes after the blaze in a second-floor flat at 639 Hawthorn Street, Springburn.

Ten firefighters battled for over three hours to quell the blaze, which is believed to have started in a cupboard.

Luckily no-one was in the flat at the time of the fire and no-one was injured.

Crew commander Jim McCulloch of Springburn Fire Service said: “It is too early to say the definite cause of the fire.”

Police were forced to close one lane of Hawthorn Street to traffic because of the blaze, which began at 8.15am on Thursday, January 26.

A spokesperson for North Glasgow Housing Association confirmed that the flat in the tenement block at 639 Hawthorn Street (pictured) is its property.

“The tenant was not at home at the time the fire broke out.

“The tenant has been offered alternative accommodation by the housing association and at this stage is staying with relatives.

“Strathclyde Fire and Rescue are investigating the cause of the fire.

“All tenants in the close were out of their properties for a short time while Strathclyde Fire and Rescue attended to the fire, which was contained within the flat.

“Thankfully no-one was injured and we’d like to pay tribute to the emergency services who attended the incident.”
