Blazing mad over plans for new petrol station in busy town centre

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a town centre petrol station have fuelled concerns among community councillors.

The scheme is part of a far-reaching Bishopbriggs development submitted to East Dunbartonshire Council by supermarket giants Morrisons.

The £40million plans for the former Bishopbriggs High School site also include a huge state-of-the-art food store and car park.

Residents have until tomorrow (Thursday, October 24) to register objections, but Bishopbriggs Community Council made their feelings clear to the council’s planning department last week.

Members are concerned that the petrol station may take customers away from existing businesses - which could be forced to close, leaving hard-to-sell contaminated land.

Their solution is for new petrol stations only being allowed on land already tainted.

A community council spokesperson said: “Within Bishopbriggs there have been two such closures in recent years.

“In each case the contaminated land lay derelict for years, in fact one of these sites is still derelict. These overgrown, untended sites have been a public eyesore.

“We would suggest that if the developer wants to build a new petrol station then the location should be the existing contaminated site.

“Market forces have demonstrated that there are sufficient petrol stations locally to meet our needs. If another one is granted planning permission then it, or one of the existing petrol stations, will be out of business in a short time.”
