Blunkett backs parents over bus cuts protest
CONTROVERSIAL cutbacks to schools buses in East Dunbartonshire have been condemned ... by former Cabinet high-flier David Blunkett.
In an e-mail to an East Dunbartonshire parent, Mr Blunkett said he was "very sorry" to hear what the council was doing.
Blunkett, a former Education Secretary, is chairman of the Yellow Schoolbus Commission - an initiative attempting to pursue a 'safer, integrated school transport system across the UK'.
In his e-mail to the concerned parent, Mr Blunkett said: "I hope that a local campaign might bring a change of mind.
"I have been in touch with the leader of the council (Rhondda Geekie) and, like you, I'm very disturbed that the Labour group was not positively behind you."
Mr Blunkett is standing as a Labour candidate in Sheffield in the forthcoming General Election.
He said that if elected he would be in touch with his colleagues at East Dunbartonshire Council.
He added: "It may be that they are not fully appraised of the issues."
But council leader Rhondda Geekie told the Herald: "I don't think David Blunkett is fully appraised of the issues here.
"I think what we are doing is in line with David Blunkett's campaign."
