Books of Condolence opened for Councillor Charles Kennedy

TRIBUTES are continuing to flood into the Herald office for Councillor Charles Kennedy.

Councillor Kennedy sadly passed away on Friday, July 13, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

The Campsie and Kirkintilloch North Councillor was 63.

Hundreds of people attended his funeral service at St Paul’s Church in Milton of Campsie last week. During the requiem mass Father Kevin Murray spoke of Councillor Kennedy’s dedication to helping others and his leadership qualities.

Mourners packed into the village church for the funeral service, with the overspill accommodated in the church hall where the service was relayed on speakers.

Speakers were also placed outside the church for those who were unable to get in as the funeral cortege left the church grounds. People gathered to pay their respects to the campaigning councillor, and burst into spontaneous applause as the hearse drove past on its way to Campsie Cemetery, in Lennoxtown.

Books of condolence have now been opened by East Dunbartonshire Council at Craighead Community Centre in Milton of Campsie, and at Tom Johnston House in Kirkintilloch.

The books will be available until 5pm on Tuesday, July 31, to give local people an opportunity to record their thought if they so wish.

The books will be passed to Councillor Kennedy’s family.
