Brakes put on campaign to improve road safety
HOPES of having bollards installed along a busy road to improve safety has been dashed.
Woodhill Residents’ Group submitted a petition with 56 signatures to East Dunbartonshire Council.
They want bollards installed from Thrums Avenue to Woodhill Road, in Bishopbriggs, to stop cars parking illegally and blocking sight lines at the junction.
They fear there could be an accident.
But councillors voted against the move at a recent meeting of the development and infrastructure committee.
A report before them said that having bollards could make the situation worse.
Bishopbriggs South councillor, Gordan Low, put forward an amendment requesting that the police be asked for their opinion and for more information on the council’s policy regarding the use of bollards. But it was rejected.
A report before councillors said that vehicles are likely to park half on the footway and half on the road.
It added: “Should bollards be installed on the east footway, it is the roads service’s view that this would lead to vehicles parking further out on the southbound carriageway, which would lead to congestion and adversely affect the passage of traffic.
“The situation would present a potential risk of traffic accidents on Woodhill Road.”
Donald Macdonald, chairman of Woodhill Residents’ Group, said: “It’s disappointing. We feel this was a positive way of dealing with a road safety issue without having to have the police come out and spend a lot of time booking people.
“There have been a number of reports of near misses. We will be asking the police to ensure that the double yellow lines are enforced.”
The matter will now go before the full council.
