Buy-out offers job hopes

A CASH-strapped Bishopbriggs firm could flit to Cumbernauld in a desperate bid for survival.

There were hopes this week that jobs could be saved at John McGavigan Ltd after a last gasp management buy-out appeared to be on the verge of going through.

However, it's believed staff at the Bishopbriggs plant have been asked to accept a 15 per cent reduction in salary before the move to Westfield, in Cumbernauld, can go ahead - and they were given only 24 hours to make a decision on the offer.

Workers were initially told about the proposed deal at a union meeting last week.

One ex-employee, made redundant in mid-October, claimed: "There's real anger at only being given 24 hours to sign the letters sent out.

"About 90 per cent of the workforce have signed them under duress."

It's claimed that 24 people - about 25 per cent of the remaining workforce at John McGavigan - refused to accept the deal.

It's thought the move to Cumbernauld could happen within the next three to four months.

Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP David Whitton said: "The situation at McGavigans is still progressing with a view to a takeover by the management.

"I've been speaking to Scottish Enterprise and the Enterprise Minister.

"I'll be assisting in any way I can. Hopefully the management will conclude a buy-out by the end of the week.

"There's no timescale to the project, this is about how they can keep the company going."

MP Jo Swinson said: "I understand that KPMG are keen to reach a deal with McGavigans' managers, who are currently the preferred bidders for the company.

"Negotiations are ongoing, however, and I understand there are still some issues which need to be worked through before a sale can be agreed."

A spokesperson for administrators KPMG said: "We're progressing with a number of projections and hope to provide a formal update within the next 10 days."

John McGavigan Ltd first set up in Kirkintilloch 87 years ago. The firm moved to the Bishopbriggs site in the 90s.

The specialist print company makes parts for the auto industry.
