Bye bye gum in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs
A TOWN centre hazard could meet a sticky end soon.
Streets covered in chewing gum could soon be a thing of the past in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs.
The council has bought two state-of-the-art machines to tackle the sticky problem.
Using a combination of chemicals and steam, the machines dislodge and break down the chewing gum in a matter of seconds.
Each machine cost 2,250 and council leader Rhondda Geekie thinks it's a price worth paying.
She said: "Chewing gum is the scourge of all town centres. It looks horrendous and is notoriously difficult to remove.
"People often don't seem to think of dropping chewing gum as littering, but it is one of the worst types of litter there is."
The machines are set to hit town centre streets over the coming weeks.
On the schedule will be Kirkintilloch's Townhead and Cowgate.
Business for Kirkintilloch chairman Lex Gaston thinks they will make a real difference
He said: "This is another way to make the town centre look nicer. It's only when you start looking for it that you realise just how much chewing gum there is on the pavements."
He added: "We need to talk the town up as much as possible and this will make Kirkintilloch a better place."
