Calls for new police HQ to be built in Gartcosh

THE headquarters of the new Scottish police force should be built in Gartcosh.

That’s the view of Coatbridge and Chryston MSP Elaine Smith.

She thinks the new Scottish Crime Campus, currently being built in the village, would be an ideal site for the single Scottish force.

Scotland’s eight police forces are being merged into a single Scottish force - Police Scotland - from the start of April.

Ms Smith asked Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill if further consideration had been given to locating the HQ at the site.

She has now requested to meet with Vic Emry, the chairman of the Scottish Police Authority, and Stephen House, the Chief Constable of Police Scotland.

Ms Smith said: “I understand there have been calls for the headquarters to be located outwith the Central Belt, however I believe that the site in my constituency would be ideal given the transport links available and the excellent facility that is already being built.”

Kenny MacAskill said: “The siting of the permanent headquarters of the police service of Scotland will be a matter for the Scottish Police Authority and the service.”
