Canal Festival was just splashing!
AN ASTONISHING 24,000 people braved wind and rain to take the plunge at Kirkintilloch Canal Festival.
The weather may have been mixed, but the verdict certainly wasn't – Kirkintilloch Canal Festival was spectacular.
The festival included a variety of boat trips, live music, funfairs, attractions, exhibitions, a street parade, police open day and more.
This year saw the debut of the British Waterways Waterwalker at Southbank Marina.
Members of the public got the chance to 'walk on water' on top of the canal, within an inflatable sphere.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie officially opened the canal festival on Sunday and spent the afternoon enjoying the family atmosphere in the town.
She said: "It has been really exciting to watch the canal festival grow from a great event into a truly spectacular one over the last few years.
"Once again the town was packed with local people and visitors alike enjoying the noise, colour and fun of what was a fantastic family day out.
"The atmosphere on the Saturday evening with music, displays and fireworks set the scene for the following day.
"I'd like to thank the organising team for the hours of hard work that they put into making the event such a success and thanks also to the people of East Dunbartonshire for coming out to support their town and the ever-popular festival."
One of the highlights this year was the special Roman-themed street parade through the town centre.
Community groups and organisations from Kirkintilloch and beyond took part.
The canal festival has been nominated for a VisitScotland Thistle Award in the category of Excellence in Scottish Tourism.
