Cash for a new primary school – but where should it go?
FUNDING has been announced for a new primary school in East Dunbartonshire - provided the cash-strapped council stump up half the cash.
At the recent Scottish Budget it was announced £80million would be earmarked for 30 new schools across the country.
East Dunbartonshire MSP Fiona McLeod said she was “delighted” that her constituency was included in the Scottish Government scheme.
She added: “With progress now being made on the new Lairdsland Primary project, and the non-secondary school estate under review, this is an ideal time to see where else we can put a new primary school building.
“Once again the Scottish Government is delivering for East Dunbartonshire - let’s get the kids a new school, Scottish builders working and the economy turning.”
But council education chiefs said that the funding was only an “option” within a wider reorganisation of primary school buildings.
Gordon Currie, the council’s head of education, said: “This is a new phase of funding through the Scottish Government and Schools for the Future Programme.
“This money will be 50 per cent funding of any new build, with East Dunbartonshire Council match funding the other 50 per cent.
“No project has been identified as the council is looking at options through the primary school estate review.
“Any decision on which school is to be identified will be taken following the completion of the consultation process.
“This gives us a further option when we are considering the results of our consultation for the future school estate.”
