Chinese takeaway in Kirkintilloch
IMMIGRATION officers have swooped on a Kirkintilloch restaurant - arresting five people.
Three men and two women were arrested on immigration offences at the Moon River Restaurant, in Kirkintilloch's High Street, on Friday, June 13.
The five workers, from Malaysia and China, were the subject of an investigation by the UK Border Agency, who are now taking steps to remove them from the UK.
The restaurant owners could face fines of up to 10,000 for each illegal worker if further investigations show that proper checks were not undertaken prior to employment.
Phil Taylor, regional director of the UK Border Agency in Scotland and Northern Ireland, said: "The UK Border Agency is carrying out operations like this one in Kirkintilloch throughout Scotland every week.
"Employing illegal workers damages our communities, and we are determined to step in and identify those employers who are breaking immigration laws and to remove those people who do not have the right to be in the UK."
At the time of going to press the Herald was unable to contact the owners of the Moon River Restaurant for comment.
