Coatbridge College pulls out of merger plans involving Kirkintilloch campus

A COLLEGE merger has been thrown into confusion after one of the institutions left negotiations at the eleventh hour.

A consultation was recently launched into merging Cumbernauld, Coatbridge and Motherwell colleges to create a new college covering the whole of Lanarkshire.

The plans have lead to fears over the future of Cumbernauld College’s East Dunbartonshire Campus of Further and Higher Education, located at Kirkintilloch’s at Southbank Marina.

But now the board of management at Coatbridge College have pulled out - insisting that they were not being an proportionate say on the plans.

A college spokesperson said: “For any merger to succeed, there needs to be a high level of trust and a strong desire to proceed on equal terms across all parties.

“Despite continued efforts to engage positively, no progress has been made in achieving meaningful inclusion in the merger process.

“We wish Motherwell and Cumbernauld well in their efforts and will continue to play a full role in the Federation supporting the people of Lanarkshire.”

Meanwhile chiefs at the two remaining colleges insist that they will proceed with the merger without Coatbridge, or welcome the them back to negotiations at a later date.
