Community in mourning for 'lovely family'

SUPPORT and counselling has been offered to pupils at a Bishopbriggs school after the tragic death of their teacher.

The bodies of Diane Harley (47) and her husband James (51) were found in their home in St Andrew's Avenue, Bishopbriggs, on Tuesday (March 16) around 7.45pm.

Police have confirmed the couple had gun shot injuries.

It's been reported that Mr Harley shot his wife before killing himself.

Mrs Harley taught the P4/5 class at Meadowburn Primary School and Mr Harley was a taxi driver.

The couple have two teenage children.

Staff at Meadowburn Primary had to break the tragic news to Mrs Harley's pupils.

The school has sent a letter to parents and pupils have been offered counselling and support.

An East Dunbartonshire Council spokesperson said: "Mrs Harley's pupils have been informed of this sad news and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."

A police helicopter and an armed response unit were called to the couple's home last Tuesday evening.

The street was temporarily closed off while officers investigated the incident.

Neighbours have been left shocked and saddened by the deaths.

Police said post mortems were due to be carried out and a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Detective Inspector Stephen Grant, of Kirkintilloch CID, said: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths of Mr and Mrs Harley."

He added: "I would like to reassure members of the local community that this incident poses no risk or danger to anyone else."

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson said: "I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the deaths of Mr and Mrs Harley.

"Bishopbriggs is a close-knit community and I know local people will be distressed by this tragic news.

"Our thoughts are with the family, and especially Mr and Mrs Harley's children."
