A new consultation into the future of primary schools is set to launch just days after children returned for the new academic year.
Next Monday will see East Dunbartonshire education chiefs launch a statutory consultation into two further primary school mergers - part of the local authority’s ‘Primary School Improvement Programme’.
It follows a similar process earlier this year on proposals to combine Lenzie and Lenzie Moss primaries, along with Woodhill and Auchinairn primaries, in Bishopbriggs.
The new consultation will look at a prospective merger between St Agatha’s Primary and St Flannan’s Primary, in Kirkintilloch. The scheme would see a new school built on the site of St Flannan’s Primary.
The merger of St Joseph’s Primary, in Milngavie, and St Andrew’s Primary, in Bearsden, will also be on the table. The consultation starts on Monday, August 26, and will run until October 11.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie urged residents to have their say before the October deadline.
She said: “These two statutory consultations will take place from August 26 until October 11 and will follow the Scottish Government prescribed statutory consultation process.
“We have stated throughout our Primary School Improvement Programme, that the statutory consultations are an opportunity for the stakeholders of each school community to see the proposals in more detail and to feed in to the process.
Public meetings will be held at both Kirkintilloch schools on Thursday, September 19, from 7.30pm-9pm.
Angry scenes are expected at the St Agatha’s meeting as parents have previously pledged to fight any merger, arguing: “Children should not be ignored in an attempt to sort out financial problems.”
A statutory consultation document will be sent out to stakeholders in each school community and will be available on the council website www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk from Monday, August 26, along with further supporting information.
