Cops and council keeping an eye for out for road ‘rats’ in Kirkintilloch and beyond

DRIVERS who used quiet streets as ‘rat runs’ to avoid traffic hold-ups could come under the watchful gaze of East Dunbartonshire Council and the police.
Long-running roadworks have been causing frustration for locals and drivers using Waterside Road, in Kirkintilloch.
There have been reports of motorists taking action to avoid temporary traffic lights by using Iona Way and Muirside Avenue as a shortcut between Merkland Drive and Waterside Road.
Scotland Gas Networks is currently in the midst of a £176,000 project to upgrade gas mains.
Work started in October and is scheduled to last until the end of March.
Temporary traffic lights have led to lengthy delays in both directions on Waterside Road and also on Merkland Drive.
David Devine, head of roads and neighbourhood services at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “While roadworks are in place, drivers often look for alternative routes on the public highway.
“We haven’t received any complaints about Iona Way, but in the light of the concerns now being raised we will monitor the situation and will ask for the assistance of our colleagues in the police if traffic regulations are not being adhered to.”
Reader Sharon Horner emphasised the traffic problems in the area – particularly at the start and end of the school day, with the close proximity of St Agatha’s and Gartconner primary schools.
She added: “I sincerely hope they are going to repair the grass verges they dug up, they are a mess.”
A spokesperson for Kirkintilloch police said: “Police would like to remind motorists to be mindful when taking alternative routes through residential streets.
“These roads are not designed for heavy volumes of traffic and can also be busy with pedestrians, especially round school hours. Police urge drivers to take extra care when using these routes and drive in accordance with the area and conditions, keeping speeds down and being alert to pedestrians – especially children.”
