Could tragic accident have been avoided?

A MAN was knocked down and killed as he walked home near Lennoxtown.

Kirkintilloch driver Ross McChrystal was speeding at more than double the 30mph limit when he suddenly saw Edward Devlin (40) in the middle of the road.

It is estimated that McChrystal was travelling at 71mph at the time.

Mr Devlin's girlfriend Theresa Sinclair watched in horror as the car smashed into him and threw him along the roadway, the High Court in Glasgow has heard.

McChrystal and a nurse who was passing by tried to give Mr Devlin first aid and called for ambulance, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver has admitted causing Mr Devlin's death by driving carelessly at Campsie Road on June 22, last year.

He is due to be sentenced next month, when his advocate will give his side of the story.
