Court action over 38 pence!
A FAMILY was threatened with court action over a council tax bill of just 38p!
Paul Duncan, who lives with his 65-year-old mum in Auchinairn Road, Bishopbriggs, was shocked to receive the letter from East Dunbartonshire Council last week.
Mr Duncan said the 38p referred to a bill that was not paid in full in April last year.
He thought the full payment had been made at the time and claims no letter was sent asking for the shortfall.
Mr Duncan (34) said: "The first payment was 28.38, which I thought had all been paid.
"We then received this letter last week about court action.
"It's a joke. The council would have spent almost as much on a first class stamp sending the letter out, not to mention the costs that would have been incurred with any court action.
"I went straight down to the council offices to pay it.
"An extra 4p had been added in charges. When I phoned the council to complain, I was told all they care about is that it was paid."
A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said: "We are duty-bound to maximise the revenue from council tax collection.
"However, we would not pursue collection if it put people in genuine hardship.
"We do not normally pursue small penny amounts.
"When the process started on this particular case it was more than pennies that were being sought."
