Dad uses pedal power to raise £1600 for charity

A 63-year-old man cycled 56 miles round a Scottish island to raise money for a charity close to him.

John McCallum took on the challenge in Arran for Alzheimer Scotland. The dad has a family member who suffers from the disease.

John, from Bishopbriggs, has raised an amazing £1,600 for the charity.

He said: “I did 18 miles only on the Friday as the rain was horrendous. On the Saturday, a much nicer day, I managed the remaining 38 miles. It’s not bad for a 63-year-old.

“It was tough as Arran is not exactly flat.”

John, who works for Arnold Clark, added: “Alzheimer’s is such a dreadful disease. There’s 80,000 people who suffer from it in Scotland.

“The money I raised might be used to provide respite for families.

“I had a target to raise £500. It was amazing the number of people who came up to me during the cycle and asked if they could contribute. Many of them said they had a family member who had Alzheimer’s.

“Victoria Bowling Club in Torrance has been very supportive and Arnold Clark donated £250.”
