Drilling for gas in village could have sparked jobs boom, says company
A COMMUNITY concerned by plans to drill for gas may have missed out on a windfall says a firm who have abandoned any hopes of setting up in Strathkelvin.
Rumours began circulating last month that moves to extract coal bed methane from land next to the Devro plant in Gartferry Road, Moodiesburn, could still happen, despite drilling company Reach CSG dropping its original planning application to carry out the work.
One of the ways used to extract the gas is known as ‘fracking’.
It involves a drilling technique using a high pressure mixture of water and chemicals to cut through under ground rock to release the gas.
However, when contacted by the Herald about the latest rumours, Reach CSG said they would not be carrying out any work in the Strathkelvin ward area.
Reach CSG spokesman Graham Dean said: “We no longer have any plans to create jobs by drilling at the Devro site.
“We have no plans to drill anywhere else in the Strathkelvin ward.
“We never at any time had any plans to frack at the Devro site.
“We believe that in coals under the eastern part of the Devro site there may be significant quantities of gas.
“This gas could have been supplied to local businesses and residents and doing this would have created jobs.
“But without drilling we will not now know how great the benefits would have been to the community.”
Fracking was in the news recently when it was linked to two minor earthquakes in the Blackpool area.
