East Dunbartonshire Council election results are announced

THE results of the East Dunbartonshire Council election have now been announced - despite a hiccup with the count.

The local authority’s returning officer Gerry Cornes announced the successful candidates in this year’s election today at Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome.

Voters turned up at the polls yesterday to decide the make-up of East Dunbartonshire Council for the next five years.

The count began this morning at the Leisuredrome but candidates in several wards faced an agonising wait after a technical fault hit proceedings.

Returning officer Gerry Cornes blamed the delay on a loose wire.

After the results had been announced, Mr Cornes said: “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this council election; the candidates and their agents, the police for their role in the election process and the election and count staff for all their hard work over recent weeks.

“I would also like to thank everyone who took the time to vote yesterday or by post.”

The results and turnout for each of the wards were as follows -

Ward 1 (Milngavie) 46.07% - Jim Gibbons (SNP), Eric Gotts (Lib Dems), Maureen Henry (Labour).

Ward 2 (Bearsden North) 50.91% - Duncan Cumming (Ind), Ashay Ghai (Lib Dems), Ian Mackay (SNP).

Ward 3 (Bearsden South) 46.46% - Vaughan Moody (Lib Dems), Keith Small (SNP), Manjinder Shergill (Labour).

Ward 4 (Campsie and Kirkintilloch North) 44.67% - Charles Kennedy (Independent Alliance), John Dempsey (Labour), David Ritchie (SNP).

Ward 5 (Bishopbriggs North and Torrance) 48.65% - Una Walker (Labour), Anne McNair (SNP), Billy Hendry (Con).

Ward 6 (Bishopbriggs South) 41.78% - Gordan Low (SNP), Alan Moir (Labour), Michael O’Donnell (Labour).

Ward 7 (Lenzie, Kirkintilloch South) 45.39% - Rhondda Geekie (Labour), Gillian Renwick (SNP), Anne Jarvis (Con).

Ward 8 (Kirkintilloch East and Twechar) 40.01% - John Jamieson (SNP), Stewart MacDonald (Labour), Jack Young (Independent Alliance).

Meanwhile, North Lanarkshire Council have announced the result of ward 5 (Strathkelvin).

Turnout was 41.16% and councillors elected were William Hogg (Labour), Frances McGlinchey (SNP), John McLaren (Labour), Brian Wallace (Labour).
