End of an era

THE Post Office will close the doors on its Kerr St branch in Kirkintilloch for the last time next month.

The branch will shut on Wednesday, November 21, ahead of the transfer to WH Smith, in Cowgate, the next day.

The controversial move was rubber-stamped in July, following a public consultation, despite more than 1,000 people signing a petition opposing the move.

Staff had been offered voluntary redundancy, redeployment within the Post Office or the chance to apply for a job with WH Smith.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "Everything at WH Smith will be in place ahead of the move.

"In order to make the transition as seamless as possible for customers, the Kerr Street branch will close on Wednesday and re-open in WH Smith on Thursday."

Meanwhile, MP Jo Swinson has claimed the Government is treating Post Office customers 'with contempt' over possible closures of local branches.

The East Dunbartonshire MP hit out over a programme to close 2,500 branches throughout the UK, which is expected to be announced this week.

Speaking following a debate in the House of Commons, Ms Swinson said: "We have already seen huge numbers of local post offices closing across the country.

"My East Dunbartonshire constituency has lost more than a third of its post offices in recent years.

"With the threat of further closures on the way, I would have thought ministers would be looking to engage with local communities.

"It appears that, as in the past with Labour on post office closures, the public will be treated with contempt and denied a genuine say.

"It is vital that communities can influence changes affecting their local services."
