Famed archives dept could be cut back
A TREASURE trove of local history in Kirkintilloch could be among the first victims of tough council cutbacks.
That is the anxiety surrounding East Dunbartonshire's information and archives service.
The department, based at Kirkintilloch's William Patrick Library, is renowned nationwide for its standards of excellence.
Their collection dates back to the 15th century and include photographs, documents, maps, plans and audio-visual material.
They are also the first stop for residents looking to research their family tree and work closely with the council's museums service.
The department employs 6.5 staff, five of whom are understood to be professionally qualified, but there are concerns that the service could be 'watered down' by council chiefs desperate for savings.
But a council spokesperson scotched rumours that only two members of staff would remain in the department after restructuring.
The spokesperson said: "There is not a reduction from seven posts down to two. Some posts, for example the Freedom of Information officer, are being transferred in the overall structure.
"There are 4.5 staff in new structure who will be involved with information and archives, with the potential for additional support from the development staff contained within the new service structure.
"At least two, and maybe as many as 3.5, posts will be based at Kirkintilloch, but this is a developing structure and the operational deployment has not been fully finalised."
The spokesman added: "All service areas in the council are potentially subject to service efficiencies due to the difficult financial position the council is in.
"Leisure and cultural staff will work hard to ensure that a quality service will be delivered to customers with the resources available."
