A fundraising campaign has been launched to help a little girl with disabilities get equipment that will help improve her life.

Four-year-old Claire Buchanan was diagnosed with Gross Motor Delay at the age of three. The condition means that she has low muscle tone, joint hypermobility and mild hearing loss.

Claire also has an undiagnosed syndrome (syndrome without a name - SWAN) and is currently on a Deciphering Developmental Disorders study (DDD) to find out if using new genetic technologies can help doctors understand why patients get developmental disorders.

Caudwell Children, a national charity providing practical and emotional support to disabled children, and their families, has agreed to support Claire by sourcing the equipment and helping the family in their attempts to fundraise for it.

Claire’s mum, Kim, successfully applied to the charity for a Carousel Tricycle and a Be Safe Isu Car Seat, both of which are not available on the NHS.

The equipment will cost £2,611 and the family, from Kirkintilloch, desperately need funds to help cover the cost.

Kim said: “Claire is the happiest little girl on the planet and everyone knows her. The new mobility equipment will be life changing for her.

“She sees her brother and sisters playing on their bikes and she can’t go and play with them. A Carousel Tricycle will enable Claire to play out safely and the Be Safe Isu Car Seat will keep her safe, secure and comfortable in the car.

Kim added: “We appreciate any support that the local community can give us.”

A fundraising page has been set up for Claire, who lives with her mum, dad Paul and brother and sisters in Kirkintilloch.

On the page, the youngster said: “I have Gross Motor Delay which means I find it very difficult to walk.

“The equipment will enable me to strengthen my legs and to be safe, comfortable and secure in the car.

“Please fundraise with us and make a difference today.”

On average there are 100,000 disabled children waiting for appropriate mobility equipment in the UK.

Rachel Dring, Caudwell Children’s community fundraiser, said: “Claire is a beautiful, happy little girl. She is full of life and it is vital that she gets the equipment that she needs and deserves if she is to reach her full potential.”
