Father and son golfers flying high after hitting albatrosses

YOU might have thought it was a wing and a prayer, but a father and son beat astronomical odds to hit ‘albatrosses’ on the same golf course . . .within days of one another.

The accomplishment - scoring three-under-par on a hole - is harder to achieve than even a hole-in-one, but both Billy and Jack Campbell holed shots to register the rare feat at Kirkintilloch Golf Course recently.

Billy (45), who plays off a handicap of +2, got his first ever albatross at the par 5, 10th hole in the semi-final of Kirkintilloch’s Winter League Competition – The Canada Cup.

He said: “I was really chuffed. I have been waiting a long time as I have been playing golf for over 30 years and in truth I thought it would probably never happen.

“I was still getting congratulated by members a couple of days later when Jack went and stole my thunder.”

Jack (15), who has a handicap of 4 and has been a member of Kirkintilloch Golf Club for three years, was playing in the club’s Sheila Campbell Memorial Trophy when he landed his own albatross.

He holed his tee shot at the par four, 3rd - with the ace particularly poignant as the tournament is named in honour of his late mother.

He said: “I could not believe it. I knew I had hit a good drive and when myself and my playing partners went up to look for my ball I could not find it.

“I was about to go back to the tee to hit my next shot when one of my playing partners looked in the hole and told me that I had aced my tee shot.”

He added: “To get an albatross in my mum’s memorial trophy was special.”

Kirkintilloch Golf Club captain Duncan Gray said: “Everyone is well aware of how good a golfer Billy is, but now it seems Jack is catching up fast and will soon give him a run for his money”.
