Fears for Kirky campus in college merger
AN MP has raised concerns over plans to merge two two further education colleges.
Cumbernauld College, which operates a campus at Kirkintilloch’s Southbank Marina, is set to merge with Motherwell College in August.
But MP Gregg McClymont, who represents Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East, has concerns about the plans.
He said: “The Scottish Government’s devastating cuts to college budgets have left Cumbernauld and Motherwell with no choice but to merge in order to make the massive savings forced upon them.
“However, many students in Kirkintilloch will share my unease towards the proposals.
“If the merger goes ahead, the new college will be much more Lanarkshire-focussed and students will be worried about the possible consequences for the East Dunbartonshire campus.
“It’s almost impossible to travel from the area to Motherwell by public transport, so I will be seeking reassurances that courses and facilities in Kirkintilloch are safe.”
In last week’s Herald, a spokesperson for Motherwell College could not guarantee that the East Dunbartonshire Campus of Further and Higher Education would continue to be backed by the merged organisation.
The college spokesperson said: “It’s too early to say what the impact might be, however we can guarantee that learners will not be disadvantaged.”
