Fears grow for greenbelt as developers home in.

Residents have raised concerns and objections to several prospective new housing developments.

Friday (June 20) was the deadline for the public to submit comments on a series of housing projects put forward by developers as part of East Dunbartonshire Council’s upcoming Local Development Plan.

The document - due for publication in April 2015 - will set out which areas of land can be built on in the coming years.

Many of the speculative projects - including some on current greenbelt - are proving to be unpopular.

In Milton of Campsie over 200 people crammed into a recent public meeting in the Stirling Hall to have their say about applications to build hundreds of houses around the village, including at Redmoss Farm and Alder Road - with the former Lillyburn Works site already earmarked for 52 new homes.

One resident said: “We understand that there is a need for more housing but we question the areas being looked at and the sheer quantity of possible developments around the village”.

Meanwhile, in Bishopbriggs, a development of 120 houses near St Mary’s Road has also angered the community.

One resident said: “This is supposed to be greenbelt land and the residents are not happy this is even being looked at.

“We’ve had 20 years of disruption here from various building projects and the last thing we want is another one.”

Thomas Glen, the council’s head of development and regeneration, said: “I would like to thank everyone who took an interest and made submissions as part of the latest consultation, which is an important step towards the formation of the LDP.All of the submissions will now be considered and a Report of Findings will be published.”
