Fingerprint row rumbles on at schools

HI-TECH plans to use fingerprint ID at new schools in East Dunbartonshire are still up in the air.

Anxious parents have called for more consultation on the controversial system of biometric fingerprint identification.

The futuristic technology is set to be installed in the six new private/public partnership (PPP) schools in East Dunbartonshire.

It is already being used at Lenzie Academy for paperless transactions including purchasing school meals.

At a parent council forum meeting last week, parents representing all six schools voted for caution, refusing to give the system their backing until a consultation process is carried out.

SNP MSP Gil Paterson also has questions about the system and is planning to raise the matter in Holyrood.

But council education chiefs insist that a consultation process is already in the pipeline.

A council spokesperson said: "The system is already operating successfully in Boclair Academy and Lenzie Academy and will continue to do so.

"The council has already made a commitment to hold consultations in the six proposed PPP schools and an invitation will be extended to the associated primary school parents at that time."
