Tributes have been paid to former Labour MP and MSP Sam Galbraith, who died earlier today (Monday)
Mr Galbraith was 68.
A distinguished neurosurgeon before he entered politics, Sam underwent a lung transplant operation at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital in 1990.
A dedicated family, Sam and his wife Nicola had three children - Mhairi, Heather and Fiona.
Sam became the MP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden in 1987.
Following Labour’s landslide victory in the 1997 General Election and before devolution, he was appointed Health Minister in the Scottish Office.
Then, following devolution in 1999, First Minsiter Donald Dewar appointed Sam as Education Minister in his first ever cabinet at the Scottish Parliament.
Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum.
