Fury over Milngavie trains

Milngavie commuters were left furious this week as a series of train faults sparked havoc throughout the local rail network.

Hundreds of people travelling from Bearsden, Hillfoot and Milngavie have endured a catalogue of cancellations and delays over the past few days.

On Monday, damage to the overhead cables near Dumbarton caused disarray on the lines, having a knock-on effect for the entire network.

Journeys in and out of the area were severely disrupted with cancellations on the Edinburgh-Milngavie and Milngavie-Cumbernauld services.

While Network Rail tried to repair the damage, there were reports of delays of as long as four hours on trains leaving Glasgow for Milngavie, Balloch and Helensburgh.

The problems continued on Tuesday morning as a number of Lanark-Milngavie trains only ran as far west as Partick, with other early-morning cancellations on the Edinburgh service.

One beleaguered commuter said: “This is outrageous, for the second day in a row I’ve been delayed by these faults.

“It’s frustrating and there are so many other commuters in the same position as me.

“We all rely on the trains to get to and from work and it seems there is a problem 
almost every day.”

This week’s disruptions come after signalling problems led to heavy delays on trains running from Milngavie to Edinburgh last Thursday.

Then, on Friday afternoon, a train running from Milngavie to Edinburgh was cancelled due to an onboard technical fault.

And at rush hour on Saturday, a train leaving Milngavie broke down near Bearsden 
for more than two hours.

The recurring delays have provoked a backlash from residents against both operator ScotRail and track owner Network Rail on Twitter.

On Monday, Martin Smith said: “Why four hours for services to run from Hyndland? Why would Milngavie-Edinburgh trains be so badly affected by Dumbarton issues?”

Another user said: “Cancel the 17:42 train from Milngavie with no announcement. Another shining example of great customer service.”

A ScotRail spokesman said: “We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the technical faults on Friday and Saturday, and due to the knock-on impact of Network Rail’s infrastructure issues.”

A Network Rails spokesperson added: “[We are] sorry for the continuing disruption around the Glasgow-Partick and Dumbarton areas.”
