Fury after driver crashes into cop car on icy road

A FED-up driver is facing a £1,600 repair bill after his car slipped on black ice and smashed into a police car.

James Bamford was turning from New Lairdsland Road into High Street, in Kirkintilloch, when the frightening ordeal took place during sub-zero temperatures.

His Vauxhall Astra suffered extensive damage to the wing, bumper and headlights.

Mr Bamford (47) said: “When I went round the corner the car slid, bounced off the kerb and hit the police car. I got the fright of my life.

“There were three police cars and about 10 officer there as they were attending an incident. The officers were sliding all over the place.

“Police officers went down to Broomhill depot to ask the council workers to send up a gritter. The roads were absolutely treacherous.”

Mr Bamford says he will be submitting a compensation claim to the council for damage to his car during the incident, which took place at around 3.45am on Sunday, February 5.

He added: “The roads should have been gritted, the council had plenty of warning about the weather.”

East Dunbartonshire Council’s head of roads and neighbourhood Services, David Devine, said: “The roads service received a weather update from the council’s weather forecast providers in the early hours of Sunday morning advising of a change to their previous night’s forecast.

“This update advised of the possibility of some isolated showers passing through our area earlier than they first forecasted, which could result in some localised patches of ice forming.

“On receipt of this update our gritting crews were deployed to regrit our primary carriageway and footway routes.”
