Future of Kirkintilloch college campus under threat as merger consultation launches

A CONSULTATION has been launched into a prospective college merger which has cast doubt on the future of a Kirkintilloch campus.

Cumbernauld College, which runs the East Dunbartonshire Campus of Further and Higher Education at Southbank Marina, unveiled plans to merge with Coatbridge and Motherwell Collages earlier this month.

The merger would create a new institution being billed by supporters as “a college for Lanarkshire”, with more than 20,000 students. But there are doubts as to whether the Kirkintilloch campus would continue to be supported after the merger - with a college spokesperson previously telling the Herald that “it’s too early to say what the impact might be”.

Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East MP Gregg McClymont has written to Mike Russell MSP, the Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, asking him to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the breadth and quality of courses available in East Dunbartonshire.

Now the college boards have launched a consultation - running until March 22 - to find out what students, staff, stakeholders and members of the public think of the plans.
