Games coming our way – Kirkintilloch and the Northern Corridor ready for cyclists
A MAJOR sports event looks set to make its way through East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire during the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The local authorities have been invited to host the Cycling Time Trial Race. Around 100 athletes are expected to take part in the race on July 31 next year.
The route is expected to take cyclists north from Glasgow city centre into East Dunbartonshire and on to Muirhead, Moodiesburn and Stepps in North Lanarkshire, before returning to Glasgow.
The course will be around 40km for men and 30km for women. The final detailed route has not yet been agreed, but it is likely to include Kirkintilloch Link Road.
A recent report before North Lanarkshire Council’s planning and transportation committee said: “The invitation to host the cycling time trial provides the council with an opportunity to join with the host city in delivering a sporting spectacular on a global scale.”
East Dunbartonshire Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “I welcomed the invitation to co-host this event and allow East Dunbartonshire to play a part in the much-awaited Commonwealth Games.
“There will be a lot of planning to minimise disruption, but I am sure residents will enjoy the experience.”
The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be the largest sporting event ever staged in Scotland with some 6,500 athletes from 71 nations participating in 17 sports over 40 venues across Scotland.
Strathkelvin councillor Willie Hogg said: “I welcome the Commonwealth Games coming to North Lanarkshire and especially the cycling time trial, which will go along the A80 corridor and showcase the villages in the Muirhead, Moodiesburn and Stepps area, and the beauty of the surrounding scenery.
“It will no doubt complement the area and its culture as a whole.”
A Glasgow 2014 spokesperson said: “Glasgow 2014 is looking at a number of options around the Time Trial course as is regular practice at this stage in the delivery of a multi-sports, multi-venue games.
“The organising committee has been in contact with potential stakeholders to discuss the opportunity to work together regarding the Time Trial course, but details have yet to be finalised.”
