UNDER STARTER'S ORDERS: Runners setting off at this year's Lenzie Jog

The countdown is on for the Lenzie family fun run and people are being encouraged to sign up for a great start to the Commonwealth Games year.

Lenzie Jog will be held on Thursday, January 2, and is open to runners of all ages and abilities and families.

The last event attracted 292 runners and organisers hope to be able to break the 300 barrier in the forthcoming jog.

There are three distances to chose from - a 2km run for the children and a 4.3km circuit for adults, which can be completed either once or twice, depending on each runner’s stamina and level of fitness.

Tony Miles, chairman of Lenzie Community Council, which organises the race in conjunction with Kirkintilloch Olympians, said: “We hope local people will come and join in, whether that be to run or walk the fun run or race in the longer events. In particular we welcome families and friends who want to run together and share the experience.”

Robert Rogerson, road race organiser for Kirkintilloch Olympians, said: “Lenzie Jog is the first local event in the lead up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in July.

“Not everyone can run there, but this is an opportunity for people of all ages and ability to get into the sporting spirit of 2014.”

Registration will be at Lenzie Union Church Old Hall starting at 10am and will cost 50p for children and £1 for adults. Races will start at 11am from Cedar Drive,

There will be soup and a roll and a banana for every runner.
