Give us a name ... Low Moss, Low Moss, Low Moss
WE want a shortlist of names for the new prison in Bishopbriggs.
That is the demand from campaigners battling to stop the new jail at Low Moss being named HMP Bishopbriggs.
Pressure is growing on the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) to announce a shortlist of possible names for a controversial new prison.
The SPS wrote to North Strathclyde Community Justice Authority (NSCJA) asking its members to suggest a permanent name for the jail being built on the site of the former Low Moss Prison.
They have been using the 'working title' of HMP Bishopbriggs, but local residents want the Low Moss name retained.
The deadline for suggestions was Friday and it is understood three names have been mooted in a letter to the SPS.
East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson wants the possible names made public so that consultation can begin in earnest.
Bishopbriggs councillor Michael O'Donnell is a member of the NSCJA and told the Herald that committee colleagues had been 'very supportive' of the views of Bishopbriggs residents.
He added: "I spoke to the chair of the NSCJA and shared my view with him that if the SPS wanted three recommendations for the name of the prison they should be Low Moss, Low Moss and Low Moss.
"The only other name that I've heard being considered was New Low Moss, but personally I don't think there's any need for any name change.
"The ultimate decision remains with the SPS and I do not know when they will be making their deliberations.
"I'm very confident they will recognise the wishes of the people of Bishopbriggs."
A spokesperson for the SPS said that publishing the recommendations was something that it would consider.
The spokesperson added: "I can confirm we received a letter from the NSCJA and we will consider its recommendations. We are still committed to engaging with the local community on a whole range of issues relating to the new prison."
