RELIEVED residents and families are celebrating this week after news that an under-threat care facility has been saved from the axe.

Chilterns Care Home, in Muirhead, could have been closed as part of swingeing cutbacks by North Lanarkshire Council.

The proposal prompted anger from residents, their families, MP Tom Clarke and local councillors – who pledged to fight to keep the facility open.

North Lanarkshire Council met last Thursday to set its budget for 2013/14 and rejected an option to close the care home.

The cash-strapped authority also agreed to save Moodiesburn First Stop Shop from the chop.

Strathkelvin councillor Frances McGlinchey said: “I am pleased that the Chilterns has been saved and also the First Stop Shop in Moodiesburn.”

MP Tom Clarke said: “I am absolutely delighted that the council have listened to the very strong and passionate representations from everyone in the community.

“This is a day that the community can celebrate Chilterns remaining open.”

However, the fate of the Iain Nicolson Recreation Centre in Chryston still hangs in the balance.
